Save a Form You Have Not Finished
Stopping halfway through a long form without losing the work, what this site keeps, and what closing the tab takes with it.

Long forms are not finished in one sitting. You get to the section that needs a reference number you do not have, and you have to stop. What happens to the work you have already done depends entirely on what you do in the next minute.
What closing the tab takes with it
Everything, unless you saved it on purpose. There is no autosave here and no server copy: the document and your typing live in the browser tab. Closing it, or a phone quietly discarding a background tab to free memory, ends that.
That is the same trade the rest of the site makes. Nothing is uploaded, which is why nothing can be restored for you.
The two things you can do

Save on this device
An explicit save keeps the document and the layers you have added in this browser's own storage. It is not automatic and it never happens without you asking. Passwords are never included in it.

Export what you have
Downloading the partly filled document gives you a file you own, independent of this browser, this device and this site. Reopen it later and carry on from there.
A habit for long forms
Export once when you have done the tedious part, before you go looking for the information you are missing. The search is where the interruption happens, and it is always longer than you expect.
If you are signed in, your settings follow you between devices, but a half-filled form does not. An account holds preferences and presets; the document you are working on is still yours alone, in this tab, until you export it.
